Your child's first day at school is a big step. As well as being exciting school can sometimes be a little daunting for children and parents alike.
At Vigo Infants we aim to make the transition from home to school a positive and happy time for both you and your child.
Below are a few ideas which may help the transition into school go smoothly.
visit the school together when going for walks
take the opportunity to attend 'storytime sessions'
let your child 'dress up' in their school uniform, encouraging him/her to dress and undress independently
help develop your child's social skills, encourage politeness, to take turns and share toys with other children
help your child to develop their self-help skills, they could practice: using the toilet and washing their hands independently, wiping their nose and putting the tissue in a bin, using a knife and fork, dressing and undressing.
please ensure all clothes and possessions are clearly labelled with your child's name, help them to recognise his/her name
encourage your child to pack his/her own school bag ready for the next day
give your child a simple instruction to follow e.g. Please would you put on your coat?
playing simple games at home such as I Spy, jigsaws, snakes & ladders, shopping and even hanging out the washing are all opportunities to learn through play.
