Vigo Language Unit
The Language Unit provides specialist teaching, support and therapy for seven children with SEN Statements for Speech, Language and Communication needs (SLCN). It is staffed by a specialist teacher and three language unit assistants. The Speech and Language Therapist works within the language unit for three sessions a week.
OFSTED rated the Language Unit provision as an 'Outstanding Feature of the School'.
The Language Unit has its own classroom called 'The Rainbow Room' and the children spend part of each day with the Language Unit staff. The children are taught by the Language Unit Manager and they follow the same curriculum as the mainstream classes. The children work on a daily intensive speech and language therapy programme with their LSA and this is overseen by the Language Unit Manager and the Speech and Language Therapist.
Makaton signing is used throughout the school to support expressive language and development. There is a Makaton Signing Club available on Friday afternoons for any children who want to learn more.
Parents are important partners in supporting their children in the Language Unit and are encouraged to come in and attend training sessions with their child's LSA and the Speech and Language therapist.
